Fire hydrants are opened and flushed after a water main break in an effort to remove the bulk of the entrapped air for the water main before it enters your home. A failure to remove this entrapped air can cause more water main breaks and a multitude of other problems. In certain cases, they must be flushed for an extended period of time.
